Women's Indoor Bowls Pennant Winners 2008
WELCOME TO WOMEN’S BOWLS AT PAYNEHAM
The Payneham Men’s Bowling Club began in 1920. Members’ wives were active in supporting the new club, particularly through a range of fund-raising activities. In 1928 they were invited by the men to form their own bowling club. An inaugural meeting was held on 29th August, with 16 ladies becoming full members. The first Women’s President was Mrs F.Hobbs.
Payneham club was the third women’s bowling club to be formed in South Australia, after the Kensington Gardens and Hawthorn Clubs, at a time when bowling was considered a male preserve! In April, 1930 women delegates from these three clubs met at the Hawthorn B.C. to form ‘The Women’s Bowling Association’, later the South Australian Women’s Bowling Association (SAWBA.)- now Bowls SA. Mrs Hobbs of Payneham was elected as the first State President, (1930 – 37).
Payneham won the Association Pennant in season 1932-33, competed in the first interstate competition for lady bowlers in Melbourne in 1931, and achieved success in a number of State Competitions.
When Payneham Bowling Club adopted a new constitution in May, 2005 the men’s and women’s facilities amalgamated as one club under a Board of Management and so began another era in bowling. Our women are justly proud of their history and traditions as pioneers in women’s bowling in SA.
Women’s Pennants are played on Thursdays and Saturdays.
In 2007/08 we have 3 teams entered on Thursday & 1 team on Saturday.
Team Practice is held on Tuesdays, from 10.00am. Players unable to attend these sessions are welcome to practise at other times when greens are available.
For players wishing to further develop their game, coaches are available to assist.
Club Championships are run each season together with a range of other Tournaments for members and invited guests.
