Pennant Report
20/2/12This weeks pennant reports
Premier One
ladder position 7th
Payneham 64 (0) v Ascot Park 78 (16)
An extremely disappointing result to say the least.
We were 8 shots down at the break with only one rink up but with only a few ends to go had closed the gap to 4 shots and had one rink up and two level.
Again the last few ends proved beyond us with the opposition playing better pressure bowls.
Away next week to Grange
Premier Two
ladder position 8th
Payneham 69 (2) v West Lakes 74 (14)
A home game which again found us under performing. The loss has left us too close to relegation for comfort. Wins in the last 3 games become vital.
Congratulations to Laini Murray, Sam Marano,Hodgy, and Robin McKnight our only winning rink.....all played well.
Very few players in the other rinks could feel they played to their ability.
A solid week of practice may help us lift for the vital match at SemaphoreMetro One East

Payneham 94 (12) v Henley 73 (4)
Division 1 East continued in good form by beating Henley comfortably on Saturday. The two big winning rinks were Finn Larson, Colin Simpson, Robin Packer and Keith Neill who finished 23 shots up, and Cliff Bovington, Daniel Kairl, Alphonso Polvere and Bill Reid 14 shots up.

Payneham 86 (14) v Beaumont 81 (2)
Gummy held on the win in a tight game 24 - 22
Gill Thomas was unable to peg back their opponents 19 - 25
Dougy Phillips also produced a win after a tight tussle 19 - 17
The rink of the day went to the Power Team of Micky Maple, Mark Sexton, Liz John & Flip Power. After building up a comfortable 12 point lead, they dropped 4 the end prior to the break. Beaumont mounted a strong attack on the lead after the break, but the Power Team held its nerve to record a solid win.
A very good overall win against Beaumont's second side, who were second on the table. A big 14 Points - GO PANTHERS!!

Today we played against Beaumont in a tight struggle, going down by 6 points overall. Only one team got the points.
At end 16 the three team scores were 16/13, 16/16 & 16/16 .
After going to Hawthorn and then having to dash to Beaumont, Walter Barrett led his team to a decisive win.
The team was J. Bianco, D. Hards, G. Innamorati & W. Barrett

Payneham 41 (0) v Millswood 72 (12)
We travelled to Millswood where the greens were very good! That’s the end of the good news! (We could not rediscover the form we found at home, in November last, when we beat them, on all three rinks!!) Millswood are comfortably on top of the ladder!
Our all-girls team consisting Val Davis (Skip), Judith Taylor, Elaine Wagener & Jill Hole had a disastrous start, finding themselves down 3-20 after ten ends! They then settled down to tough it out, eventually going down 15-29. Bad luck girls!
Pete Harris’ rink - Bob Jennings, Don Prideaux and Grant Ashby - started well (as usual) against good opponents (including 3 of the same rink we beat in November). In a low scoring game it developed into a shot for shot encounter and after the 14th end it was ten all. It was always going to be a case of the first "decent end” winning the day – how true! We dropped a four and a five within 3 ends and never recovered. Pete played well for half the game then cracked under the pressure of an opposing skipper who was on the mark all day! Grant was well beaten after a good start, however Don played some good bowls at times and Bob was his reliable self all day!
Frank Harrison (Skip) together with Lindsay Patterson, Pete Smith & Anne Bovington were the best of a poor bunch. They led for most of the day, only to give up the last five ends (and the lead), going down 13-20.
We now face Holdfast Bay (3rd) at home, Novar Gardens (9th) away and Henley (8th) at home, in our last three games. Since we are presently a bare 13 points ahead of the second-bottom side, Novar Gardens, we need to really mount a comeback (to form) in the last couple of games to avoid relegation!! The challenge is there ladies & gentlemen, so practice, practice, practice! (At least two of the final three games are at home!)

Payneham 74 (2) v West Lakes 87 (14)
Well West Lakes is always known for its windy conditions and Saturday was no exception. The winds were gusting up to 30 k's per hour and especially in the first half changed directions almost every bowl. (it seemed like that anyway)
We were down by five or six shots at the break and were just not able to bridge the gap with the West Lake group bowling more consistently than us.
Aussie Cunninghams rink was down most of the day and eventually lost by 12 shots. Wayne Prossers rink was up by four shots at the break but lost the first four ends after to go down by 6 shots. Alan Hursts rink was up most of the day in a tight contest but a few shots lost over the final few ends saw them go down by 2 shots. Our best rink and only winning rink of the day was Ben McDonnell, Peter Marshall, John Cook and Gabe Nardecchia who won by 7 shots.
Next week we are at home to Ascot Park.

Payneham 80 (12) v Gawler 73 (4)
A good win built around a 9 shot victory by Laini Murray's rink, where Robin McKnight (in the role of leading) and Hodgy were outstanding. John Radloff also got his rink up for a win and got very useful help from Rob Molinaro. Col Roberts and Jodie K played significant roles to help the Smith rink recover from a 10 shot deficit. Bob Allen and Ralph D'Onise fought hard to go down narrowly in a tight struggle.
12 valuable points put us within 8 points of the top four but still only 5 points clear of relegation.....Hard work still required!_____________________________________________

Division 1 East lost by 5 shots to Kensington at home. It was a better performance but we still did not get the points we needed to keep us in the race. The best result was the rink of Barry Sexton, Brian Whitehead, Chris Stegmeyer and Jim Langanis who finished 2 shots up.

Gummy fought hard all day to end up with a credible 24 - 19 Win.
Gill Thomas also held on for a 19 - 17 win
The Power team dominated early but were pegged back for a good 24 - 14 win
The rink of the day went of Dougy Phillips team of John Beard, Ian Siggs and Ian Larcombe who were level at 7 all at the tea break but then dominated after tea for a great 29 - 13 win picking up five shots on the last end.
All rinks up a great 16 point win

The rink of Milton, Munchenberg, Addison and Price where the best of a ordinary bunch.

Oh what might have been! We came within 5 shots of defeating the second top side, which would have left us comfortably in (at worst) 5th position with only a few games to go! Not to be! Playing yet again at home on our ever improving B Green against a side who walloped us on the last encounter at The Lakes, we were competitive all day.
Frank Harrison’s rink (Wally Garrett, Don Prideaux & Berny Tobin) were down 9 to nil early on & then began to find their way. They got within 5 shots on around the 15th end, but then fell away to lose by that 9 shots. (16-25 down). Our newly promoted skip, Graham Waters, together with Lindsay Patterson, Peter Smith & Anne Bovington were behind most of the day, however battled hard to succumb by only 2 shots in a great effort. (17-19 down).
Pete Harris’ rink comprising Bob Jennings, Pete Clasohm & Grant Ashby almost won the day for the team! After 18 ends, in a hard fought game, we were up 19 to 6 & had conceded only five ends. Down one or two, Pete drew the shot with his last bowl of the 19th end, but not good enough as the opposing skip played a magnificent yard-over shot to carry the kitty and gain 4 shots. This seemed to lift our opponents who then out bowled us for yet another 4 on the 20th end. We grabbed a single on the final end to win comfortably 20-14! But overall, the damage was done!!
We now face the top side, Millswood on their home turf. We must win at least a couple of our last few games as there are only a few points between us & the second bottom side!

Well this was a disappointing loss to a teamthat was bottom of the ladder.
We were a few shots down at the break but witha couple of ends to go on each rink had clawed our way to a 3 shot lead.
Shots dropped on a couple of rinks saw thatlead evaporate very quickly.
Wayne Prossers rink had a 12 shot loss despiteJoan Prosser having a great day of consistent draw bowling.
Gabe Nardecchia 's rink was up for most of theday but dropped shots late for a 3 shot loss.
The rink of Tom Ellis, Harry Faulkner, GaryMiles and Aussie Cunningham recorded a 3 shot win.
The rink of Jim Harrison, Rod Squire, KenSherry and Alan Hurst recorded the best win with a 4 shot victory.
We are away next week to West Lakes.

After leading at the tea break the gameslipped away. With Bob Allen getting good support from team of Bob Taylor, LloydLomax and Ralph D' Onise they gave us a chance.

Almost a fantastic result, however still agreat result to match and draw with a team above us on the ladder. (In view ofthe points gained, I call it a win!) When we last met at Hawthorn inOctober we had two rinks up & one down, but still lost overall. Revenge was sweet (well almost)!
We are beginning to come to grips with thenewest home carpet of B Green. The overcast conditions prevailing formost of the day, resulted in a reasonably paced surfaced.
Frank Harrison’s rink (with Alan Darby, DonPrideaux & Bernard Tobin) battled hard all day against a superioropposition and played some great bowls at times to help minimise the damage& go down 9-26. Pete Harris and rink consisting of Bob Jennings,Peter Clasohm & Grant Ashby jumped out of the blocks early to go up 6nil after three ends. Then the opposition settled down & began to getthe feel of it. Our leader Grant was particularly under pressure &whilst beaten early, bounced back after tea to take full control. Oursecond Peter Clasohm played some terrific winning bowls at important stages &had an absorbing duel against a new bowler who performed like a pro! BobJennings (third) had probably his best game of the season, soundly beating hisopponent all day! He played some incredible bowls at crucial times! None better than his up-shot when we were about 4 down(with three Hawk bowlsjammed against the kitty), he connected perfectly and carried the kittyto turn it around to one up for us! Pete Harris had a good battle withhis immediate opponent & probably took the honours. Their score 26-18 up. Guido Innammorati together with Lindsay Patterson, Peter Smith & AnneBovington again proved a great combination. They battled hard all day& at times were several shots in arrears. But as usual they finishedstrongly to draw level on the 19th end at 14 all. They then grabbed amagic 6 and 3 on the last 2 ends to bound away for an incredible win,23-14.
A great team effort all round, deserving atleast of the additional 3 points.

Payneham 79 (12) v Marion 78 (4)
Well what a terrific win this was against the top side.
At the break we were up by 3 shots and the game remained close through out.
The rink of Peter Marshall, Laini Murray, John Cook and Gabe Nardecchia although loosing were against one of the leading skips in the Premier one competition and they picked up what was to prove a very valuable 2 shots on their last end.
The rink of Tom Ellis, Harry Faulkner, Gary Miles and Aussie Cunningham were in front most of the day and recorded a reasonably comfortable 8 shot win. This was Tom Ellis's first game in the premier one competition and from all reports he played very well.
The rink of Mike Dodds, Joan Prosser, John Radloff and Wayne Prosser recorded a 9 shot win with all bowlers contributing at different times during the game.
The rink of Jim Harrison, Rod Squire, Ken Sherry and Alan Hurst had drawn to play Ashley Klose's rink. Ashley is undefeated as a skip this year although he has missed a couple of games and his winning margin in games can be big. Our rink although ultimately loosing was able to keep the scores close which was a great help to the rest of the team. This match up was the last rink to finish and with Ashley to bowl the final bowl we were two shots up overall and holding one shot on the head. After much discussions Ashley decided the only way to get the two shots for a draw or the three shots for a win was to drive their own bowl onto our shot bowl and for his bowl to remain in the head. He drove perfectly hitting their bowl onto our shot bowl but thankfully for us his bowl did not stay. From the sidelines it looked as though he may have salvaged a draw but in a close measure for the second shot we prevailed giving us a one shot victory.

In a tight match which we looked like winning we had to be satisfied with a draw and take 8 valuable points.
A win looked possible when Bob Allen rink jumped away to dominate the opponents who included B.Dixon and Luke Pietersma. But sudden big losses late in the game to Bob and Robin McKnight meant we were one down with last end to be played by Sam Marano's rink.Congatulations to this rink for getting the shot and having a win.
Bob Allen's rink including new comers to the team Lloyd Lomax and Ralph D'Onise all bowled well making rink 22 a real home ground advantage.
The draw keeps us only 5points clear of relegation. This should be a real spur to keep everyone working hard and making time for serious practice.Metro One East

Doug Phillips also struggled as did his team members, for the same reason as Gill Thomas. 9-30.

It was to be a real test for us against a team that beat us before Christmas and with us having lost a few players who moved up to cover absences in higher sides! Our replacements all performed well.
Guido Innammorati’s rink had a battle on their hands in a see-sawing game. They led comfortably early to then see their opponents get on top & take over in building a good lead late in the game. No panic here! Guido & his troops stuck a purple patch winning four of the last five ends in a row, to fall short by just one shot. Result 23-24 down. Pete Harris’ rink all had their share of reasonable bowls but were well covered by a superior opposition. Their skip in particular had all the answers, knocking bowls out and ditching (or dead-ending) the kitty at will. Our main task was to not panic, but to minimise the damage. (Great to have Val Davis back in our rink!) Result 9-21 down (again!!)
The inimitable Frank Harrison was elevated to skipper our remaining rink & together with Alan Darby (third), Don Prideaux (second), and Peter Clasohm (leader & also elevated) performed marvellously. This rink again won the day for us for the second week in a row! When the other two games finished, Frank’s rink had completed 18 ends only and the scores overall were locked together! They had bolted to a 14 to nil start and never looked like losing. To keep us all on our toes they dropped 3 on the last end, to bring us home by the smallest of margins. Their result 28-14 up.
Dreams of a pennant have faded and we must now win a few more games and consolidate our position. Well done all!

Well a week is a long time in bowls. After a very good win away last week we were very disappointing at home.
Unlike last week it was our opponents that got away to a flyer. The rinks skipped by Alan Hurst and Gabe Nardecchia who both had good wins last week were under the pump right from the start and both suffered big losses. Aussie Cunningham's rink of Robbie Molinaro, Harry Faulkner and Gary Miles got of to a good start but were pegged back and headed. They were able to fight back and recorded a narrow win. The rink of Mike Dodds, Joan Prosser, John Radloff and Wayne Prosser had a comfortable 8 shot win. All in all a disappointing day but the four points gained may be valuable come the end of the season.
It is another challenge next week at home to the top of the table Marion.

A loss we did not need .....
Bob Allen, Ralph D'Onise, Lloyd Lomax, Bob Taylor made a great comeback to snatch victory with Bob 's last bowl. Sam Marano gained a point with a hard fought draw .
Robin McKnight made a good recovery after being 17 / 1 down.
A little luck would have made a big difference in the Smith rink in what was good standard game that just got away in the last few ends.Metro One East

We journeyed to Kensy/Marryatville for a reverse bout. Pete Harris’ rink started well winning the first four ends & "racing” to 7-nil only to see our opponents recover & the score 11 all on 11 ends at the tea break. Not sure about our sandwich contents as we then went sadly astray to eventual succumb 14-25 down! (Number 3, Bob Jennings was this rink’s only consistently good performer.)
Our "stand-in” skip, Guido Innammorati’s rink had an absorbing battle all day with the difference rarely more than one or two, and in a low scoring duel they eventually went down 12-15.
Our heroes of the day were Skipper Dave Willcox & his rink who won their game well and salvaged a badly needed win for the side!
With good support from Kevin Shilvock (third), Don Prideaux (second) & Alan Darby (lead), they enjoyed a morale boosting win, 37 shots to 11.

Well what an important win in tricky conditions. With the gusty wind no two bowls seemed to react the same.
Somerton flew two Queensland premier league bowlers in to play again this week after having great success with them in the last round picking up a 40 shot win against West Lakes. There was no such joy for them this week.
Wayne Prosser's rink was drawn to play against one of the Queenslanders namely Simon Baker. Simon has recently represented Australia in Bowls and he certainly played some quality bowls. Our rink was down by 13 shots at the break but fought it out to only go down by 8 at the finish.
We were up by 20 shots overall at the break thanks mainly to Alan Hurst and his rink being up by plenty.
In the second half we were able to increase our overall advantage to run out comfortable 33 shot winners.
The Aussie Cunningham skipped rink of Robbie Molinaro, Harry Faulkner and Gary Miles took on the other Queensland bowler and after a tight game had a great 7 shot win. This opposition rink won their last game by plenty so what a great job by all four of our players.
The rink skipped by Gabe Nardecchia with Peter Marshall leading, Laini Murray at two and John Cook at three had big 12 shot win. This was Gabes first time skipping in Premier one which makes the win even more meritorious.
The rink of the day was Jim Harrison, Rod Squire, Ken Sherry and Alan Hurst. They had a 22 shot win which was terrific and certainly took a lot of pressure off the team overall.
Well done to all 16 players.

In a thrilling finish to a game we were behind in all day until the final two ends we finally lost on the last bowl of the day 79-80. Playing the last end we were ahead by 2 shots and holding 2 shots and having attempted to cover the danger areas the opposing skipper with the last bowl of the day drove the bare jack into the ditch to pick up 3 shots after a measure. A bitter disappointment with about 3 inches separating defeat from victory.
The rink of Smith,Walker,Kraguljac & Ellis kept the team in the match winning 29-13. Rob McKnight’s rink fought back from being down at afternoon tea to record a 18-16 win.
Sam Marano’s rink had a close battle all day until that fateful final bowl losing 18-19. Bobby Allen’s rink struggled all day losing 14-32.
We hope for a better result this week.

Robyn Darby’s rink also battled to go down 11-25. Our better rink for the day was Skipper Dave Willcox with Pat Welke, Don Prideaux & Alan Darby who lost by a narrow margin after a good tussle! Their score 17-20 Down.
