Henselite Cup Wrap Up
Sunday 8th January 2012
Opponent: Woodville at Woodville
Result: 3 wins, 1 loss
With several tournaments on this weekend, and with no Pennants meaning people were taking advantage of a free weekend from bowls, we had a bit of a change up to our team and introduced Rod Squire and Stuart Macrae into the mix.
Singles
Gary Miles (who played tournaments on both Saturday and Sunday) took advantage of all of the practice he received on the weekend and ran out to a comfortable lead early, leading 14-4 and holding on to win comfortably: 25-16.
Pairs
Aussie and Ben showed that even the younger guys can have too many bowls on a weekend, and were promptly 6-0 down after the first two ends... Some fantastic bowling from Aussie, including 3 touchers in a single end saw them fight back however, and they eventually went down by just 1 point: 13-14.
Triples
Harry Faulkner, Rod and Robbie Molinaro got out to a thrilling 16-5 lead against Michael Hanrahan, however Woodville fought back, taking the last 5 ends, including a 6 – Harry held on for a one point win: 18-17.
Fours
Mario, Stuey, Roger and Tommy had an interesting battle, going end for end against their opponent except for an 8 end patch that saw them win four ends in a row, then lose the next four - Up 7-3, down 7-11, up 15-11, then 15-15 with 3 ends to play. The boys did us proud though and won the game by 2 shots after taking a single shot on the final end: 18-16
Results
The 8 points against Woodville at home was a great job by all concerned, and certainly keeps us in the mix for a finals appearance.
Standings
With West Lakes, Payneham and Clearview very close at the top of the ladder, a big win against West Lakes at home would see us make the finals (We have to win 3 of the four matches).
Support Your Team
The last match before finals will be played at Payneham on Sunday 12th February – so come along and support your club!! For those who have participated in the competition, I thank you very much for your support and commitment to the Henselite Cup – you have all certainly made my job very easy.
For those who play in the final round, the very best of luck, and we know you’ll do us proud!!

Henselite Cup – Round 6
At: West Lakes
Opponent: Gawler
The Panthers needed a convincing win to stay within Finals contention, and we delivered!!
Gary Miles found some winning form against Lindsay Mortimer and lead for all but one end of the match at 8-7 down. From there he only lost a further 4 ends winning 25-16 in a brilliant display of persistence and good bowls – well done Gary!
Aussie and Ben complimented each other well, winning a dynamic struggle against Gawler’s invited player Mike Hocking. After not having a roll up before the match, Mike’s first two bowls both landed within 6 inches of the kitty, and his running shots were simply amazing. Highlight of the match was towards the end, Gawler had a toucher sitting two inches short of the kitty, about 3 feet from the ditch – Aussie’s attempt to draw a close second wood gently tapped the shot bowl... then fell in to sit half an inch off the kitty!! FANTASTIC SHOT AUSSIE!! Final Score: 16-11
The Triples had a night to forget. By all accounts the speed of the green and the wind played havoc all day, but reports tell me that Mike Dodds had a commendable performance at number 2. Daryl Kubisch and his team of Peter Reimann and Chris King were never going to be an easy task, and they showed no remorse for Harry Faulkner, Mike and Robbie cleaning them up 27-11...
... However it was a difference story on the next rink up in the Fours. This team looked decidedly different to the fours that has been quietly winning most weeks – both Mario Molinaro and Paul Uranjek had other commitments. Ken Sherry, Roger Kairl, Marie Roberts and Tom Ellis had a magnificent win – 27-12. My sources tell me that the whole team played really well – but that the opposition were very impressed with Ken Sherry’s telling bowls as skipper.
The 8 points puts us third on the ladder, only below Clearview by shots, and with two games remaining, including a home match, we are in with a strong chance to finish Top 2 with a chance to see finals action.
Ben's Report round 1
Round 1 was always going to be a David V Goliath struggle with an undermanned Payneham outfit taking on Modbury at Modbury, and I must say, we did a very good job.
The Fours of Mario Molinaro, Roger Kairl, Brian Hodkinson, and Tom Ellis came up against a decidedly stacked side of G Meekcoms, C Mills, B Harris and M Romaine – and struggled from the outset, but showed strong resolve to finish the match strongly, winning two of the last four ends.
The Triples of Harry Faulkner, Ken Sherry and Robbie Molinaro had a great battle on their hands against R Taylor, M Nicholls and J Vargas – but came up eventual winners in a see-sawing score 17-16.
The Pairs of Aussie Cunningham and Ben McDonnell played W Haskett and C Morgan. Picking up an 8 on the 8th end gave them a 10 point buffer which the held for the rest of the match, eventually winning 20-10.
The Singles was played by Gary Miles against J Nicolai. Several times Gary seemed to have the match tied up, but Nicolai managed to find the shot to keep him in the game. With the game tied up at 24-24, Nicolai held on to the last end to win 25-24.
With 2 up, 2 down, Gary Miles was again sent out to battle C Mills in the shoot out after a win last season. Unfortunately this year saw Mills gain some retribution winning the shoot out 4-2.
Payneham walked away with 4 points from a possible 10 and showed a lot of promise for this year’s Henselite Series.
Round 2 will be played at Clearview Bowling Club on Friday 4th November, however Payneham has the bye.
Round 3 is Payneham V Clearview at Salisbury on Sunday 13th November. 6pm start.
Please also note that Rounds 4 and 5 are played on the same weekend: Friday 2nd December at Gawler, and Sunday 4th December at Hope Valley.
